SILVER SURFER MOVIE MOVIE
Here's his more "official" take on the whole Silver Surfer movie issue: UPDATE: Straczynksi is now back tracking a bit, claiming that his quote to Collider was taken out of context. But with all the ‘re-boot’ talk of the ‘Fantastic Four’, I have no idea where that leaves the Silver Surfer end of things. “There are still a couple of years left on their option for two more pictures with me, as a three-picture deal is quite standard when starting a franchise-potential character.
Last month, the actor - who can be seen as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies or as the Ice Cream Man in next year's Legion - expressed his interest in playing the character again: I wanted to tell the origin of the Surfer and get into that whole thing.”Īs much as I love Doug Jones (who's under contract to play the physical form of the Silver Surfer again), this movie just doesn't make sense any way. So if they do a ‘Silver Surfer’ film down the road, it’ll have to be its own separate things.” The script that I wrote picked up right where ‘FF2’ left off. "What happened was when ‘FF2’ didn’t do as well as they hoped it would do, it caused them to call into question a ‘Silver Surfer’ movie. Straczynski's script has been done for a while and is in the hands of Fox, however it's tied into the last Fantastic Four movie and would have to be heavily re-worked. Michael Straczynski recently spoke with Collider last week and touched on the subject, saying that the not-so-hot reception to Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer made the studio put plans for the Silver Surfer character on hold.
What does that mean for the Silver Surfer spin-off many were hoping for? Well, it's unlikely to happen anytime soon. Since then, we have found out that Fox is pushing forward with the Fantastic Four reboot and that it would feature an entirely new cast.
SILVER SURFER MOVIE UPDATE
Everything they would ever need to know about life or the universe is basic knowledge to them. The last significant update we heard on the proposed Silver Surfer movie was last summer when director Alex Proyas said he's definitely not working on the project, emphasizing that he'd never work with Fox studios again. Zenn-La is a society that already pushed the limits of science past its boundaries. How does this affect the Surfer? Does he feel guilt, or is this all rather selfish to him? Also, a Surfer origin movie could show us another high-tech society, in this case Zenn-La. How does Norrin Radd of Zenn-La meet Galactus and gain the Power Cosmic and silver surfboard? In the comics, Galactus only spared eating Zenn-La because Surfer agreed to be his herald, which I believe already turns Surfer into a multi-dimensional character he becomes willing to allow Galactus to eat planets (some with intelligent life) in order to protect his own homeworld. I'd also love to see Surfer's origin story explored in the MCU. This premise may seem similar to the fish-out-of-water Thor 1 movie, but Surfer is not like an Asgardian, he is even more alien if that makes sense.
This could, in turn, give the Surfer a sense of responsibility, a desire to use the Power Cosmic to protect rather than destroy. If Surfer became imprisoned on Earth like in the comics, he could go through more of a redemptive arc, discovering what makes life so precious by spending time with humans, which could make him think back to his previous life of being Norrin Radd on his homeworld Zenn-La. While traveling around space, looking for planets that Galactus could consume, Surfer cared little for life his top priority was finding a planet suitable to keep Galactus alive, and if that came at the cost of life, so be it. I feel like a scenario like this on Earth could make for an interesting movie for the Surfer. In the comics, Galactus imprisons the Silver Surfer on Earth after he rebels against him and disagrees to continue being his herald. I believe this guy can hold up his own story. But the Silver Surfer is such a major cosmic character that I feel like there's a lot more that can be done with him than just a one-off appearance, or being reduced to a side character role. With The Fantastic Four confirmed to be in development for the future of the MCU, it seems almost inevitable for Galactus and the Silver Surfer to show up at some point too, huh? Depending on how Kevin Feige and the others decide to map things out, we'll probably see the Silver Surfer get his redemptive arc, joining the Fantastic Four in taking down his master Galactus.
